It’s no mystery that we’re big fans of Capitola Village and the surrounding neighborhoods. We recently shared our top 5 reasons for loving the Jewel Box neighborhood. One thing that makes Capitola unique is that it is an incredibly seasonal city, providing visitors and residents with two very different types of experiences during the year.

CAPITOLA SUMMER

As Memorial Day seems to be fast approaching and our weather gets warmer and warmer, we all get excited about the hustle and bustle and fun of the summer months in Capitola. The sun tends to break through in Capitola before it does in other beach areas in Santa Cruz County which makes for great weather during the often-foggy summer months. The four month stretch of Capitola’s peak season sees tens of thousands of visitors come through for various events and fun days by the sea.

The esplanade plays host to plenty of ongoing outdoor summer activities including live music on Wednesday nights and outdoor movies nights for the whole family. Not to mention the famous annual festivals that take place including the Begonia Festival and Capitola Art & Wine FestivalClick here to take a peek at all of the events happening in Capitola Village year round. The Village also boasts a pedestrian wharf for fishing and listening to live music at the Wharf House on the weekends and acts as a hub for kayaking and stand up paddle boarding.

CAPITOLA WINTER

After Labor Day, Capitola begins its transformation into a very sleepy beach town; a far cry from the hustle and bustle of the summer months. Still, some of the areas best weather and most beautiful sunsets happen after the tourist season ends, giving locals a crack at what we deem some of the best that the area has to offer. Even in late September and early October, the mild weather can be perfect for a day at the beach, with plenty of room to lay out your blanket!

Of course the off season also generally guarantees better parking and shorter wait times for some of our favorite restaurants like Stockton Bridge Grille and Caruco’s Tuscan Cuisine, both which are very popular spots during summer months. It also becomes one of our favorite places to watch winter storms roll through the bay.
